The blockade and bombardment of Venezuelan ports by British, German, and Italian warships was due to Castro's refusal to allow European governments to decide the validity of claims against Venezuela. A Washington protocol forced Venezuela to allocate 30 percent of customs revenues to repayment of European claims.  1
 
1905–8
 
Gen. Castro was named president, and Gen. Juan Vicente Gómez (1864–1935) was named vice president.  2
 
1908
 
Gen. Gómez deposed Gen. Castro. Gómez was to govern Venezuela for the next 27 years. (See Venezuela)  3
