British preferential tariff was instituted. In 1898 the preference was increased to 25 percent and in 1900 to 33.3 percent. Germany retaliated (July 7, 1899) by depriving Canada of most-favored-nation status.  1
Hubert Brown Ames (1863–1954) published his pioneering sociological study of Montreal, The City Below the Hill, modeled on progressive urban reform movements in England and the United States.  2
