Massachusetts set up a commission to establish minimum wage schedules for women and children. By 1923, 14 other states and the District of Columbia had taken similar action, setting up either a statutory minimum or giving commissions mandatory powers. Such laws were not uniformly favored by working women, some of whom perceived their own opportunities for work shrinking as a result. In any case, all such laws were dealt a severe blow in the conservative environment of the 1920s.  1
Socialist candidates captured mayoral offices in major cities, including Milwaukee, Wis.; Schenectady, N.Y.; and Berkeley, Calif. The party's presidential candidate won nearly a million votes.  2

Theodore Roosevelt announced he would accept the Republican nomination for president. He carried the preferential primaries over Taft in six states and was successful in four state conventions. In spite of this, the Republican machine managed to renominate Taft.  3

Taft's renomination. Roosevelt delegates withdrew and on Aug. 7 nominated Roosevelt as the candidate of the Progressive Party.  4

Woodrow Wilson (1856–1924) was nominated by the Democratic convention on the 46th ballot.  5

American marines landed in Nicaragua (See 1912), its fiscal affairs were turned over to an American collector, control of the Nicaraguan Bank was given to New York bankers, and the Nicaraguan government was placed on a monthly allowance.  6
During 1912 troops were concentrated on the Mexican border, and the revolutionary Madero government of Mexico was warned that it would be held accountable for loss of life and property.  7
