The SUI DYNASTY was founded at Chang'an by Yang Jian (541–604), who had married into the Northern Zhou court of the Tuoba, become its chief minister (580), and had his daughter marry the Northern Zhou emperor; when his grandson acceded to the throne, he then seized it for himself as Wendi (r. 581–604). As he still only controlled north China, in 587 he defeated the Later Liang, and in 588–589 the Chen.  1
