The Maji-Maji rebellion broke out in German East Africa. Rebellion was sparked by forced production of cotton in the Rufiji valley, as well as by issues of taxation and forced labor, but it was carried forward through the spread of the millennial message of the prophet Kinjikitili and spurred by drought.
