Consolidation of Northern Nigeria under Gov. Frederick Lugard. Lugard was appointed the first British high commissioner for Northern Nigeria in 1898. His mission: to establish British authority over the Fulani empires of Sokoto and Gwandu, and to conquer the other independent societies of the region. Lugard led the British military occupation of Kano (Feb. 3, 1903). By March 15, conquest of Northern Nigeria was completed. Serious famine broke out following the conquest. Lugard based British colonial administration upon the authority of Islamic rulers in the area, thus instituting indirect rule.  1

The British government revoked the charter of the Royal Niger Company and took over possession of Nigerian protectorates and colonies.  2
 
1900, Jan 1
 
A British protectorate was declared over Nigeria, and Sir Frederick Lugard was appointed as high commissioner.  3
