5. Sun Wu (Sunzi, “master Sun,” c. 4th Century B.C.E.)
 
Sun Wu was said to be a general hailing from the state of Qi. In his Bingfa (Art of War), he devised strategies for war and political organization needed to support it; he discussed such topics as topography, psychology, and the exploitation of human weaknesses in battle. He was especially attentive to deception and how to use minimal conflict to attain victory. His work extremely influenced 20th-century theorists of guerrilla warfare.  1
