Yuan Shikai was elected provisional president of the Chinese republic by the National Assembly, just two days after Sun Zhongshan relinquished the position in order to unify the country.  2

The Nanjing provisional constitution, which aimed at making the bicameral assembly supreme, was completed. Yuan soon came into conflict with the assembly through his own efforts to strengthen his personal power. Several opposition parties were soon formed, among them the Jinbudang (Progressive Party of Liang Qichao), advocating a strong executive, and Sun Zhongshan's Guomindang (Nationalist Party, descendant of the Revolutionary Alliance), championing the system of parliamentary government.  3
