Opening of the Ottoman Imperial Lycée of Galatasaray in Istanbul, the most famous of the state secondary schools established to provide a modern education. French was the main language of instruction, most of the teachers were foreign, and the student body included members of all religious communities. Graduates of the school played a prominent role in the government of the empire and, after it, of the Turkish Republic. | 2 |
