Cuza introduced a great land reform by decree: manorial dues were abolished with compensation to the landlords, and the peasants were given a small share of the land. Despite its intention, this reform aided the boyars. The peasantry's position continued to decline throughout the latter half of the century, especially as the population increased. | 3 |
