A conference of the powers at Paris decided to establish the United Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia, with separate but identical administrations; delegates from each of the two assemblies were to form a central commission for legislation.  1
 
1859, Jan. 17
 
Col. Alexander Cuza, a relatively unknown officer, was elected prince in Moldavia.  2
 
Feb. 5
 
The Wallachians also elected Cuza. Napoleon recognized him at once, and the other powers followed more or less grudgingly, but they recognized the union only for Cuza's lifetime.  3
