Restoration of Milosh Obrenovich, now 79 years old. He died after wreaking vengeance on his enemies.  1
 
1860–68
 
MICHAEL, son of Milosh, reascended the throne. He was a well-educated and intelligent prince whose great aim was to unite the Balkans in the crusade against the Ottomans. He introduced compulsory service in the army and the gradual development of an efficient administration. But he did so as part of a personal rule, relegating the Senate to an advisory role in 1861.  2
 
1862, June 15
 
Bombardment of Belgrade by Ottoman troops, after clashes between the garrison and the populace. Michael appealed to the powers, and the sultan was induced to concentrate his force in three or four places.  3
 
1866
 
Michael appealed again for the withdrawal of Ottoman troops. The powers induced the sultan to yield, and the last troops left Serbian territory in April 1867.  4
 
Sept. 23
 
A secret offensive and defensive alliance was created between Serbia and Montenegro.  5
