The Belgians, after first attempting to make the duke of Nemours (son of Louis-Philippe) king, elected Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg as king. The London Conference approved the selection and drew up the Eighteen Articles regulating the separation. William I broke the armistice and invaded Belgium, defeating a Belgian force before he was forced by the French to withdraw. | 1 |
