The Military Council issued a decree on the resumption of lectures in universities by Feb. 15, the suspension of student and faculty organizations, and a ban on independent student associations.  1

The independent Association of Polish Journalists was dissolved and replaced by the Association of Journalists of the Polish People's Republic.  2

The government arrested numerous participants in huge demonstrations in Warsaw.  3

Two new laws, though condemned by union members and the Polish Roman Catholic Church, effectively dissolved all existing unions and created a framework for new and closely controlled unions to replace them.  4

Solidarity leader Walesa was released from internment amid a general easing of social tensions.  5

Parliament passed laws to close the internment centers and to release thousands of internees, although many of them were rearrested for illegal trade union activities.  6
